The material a piece is made of decides how long it will look new, how to care for it and who it suits. Here are the differences – short and simple.
925 silver (sterling silver)
92.5% pure silver with strengthening metals. Nickel-free, so it's gentle on sensitive skin. Silver can darken over time – that's natural, and a silver-polishing cloth brings back the shine in seconds.
Gold plating over 925 silver
Silver jewelry with a layer of gold – the warm look of gold on a precious-metal base. To keep the plating looking great, keep it away from water, perfume and creams.
Stainless steel
Extra durable, rust-free and water-resistant – ideal for every day, sports and anyone who doesn't like taking jewelry off. Gold-plated steel combines the look of gold with high durability.
14K and 18K gold
Real gold throughout: it won't tarnish or rust and lasts a lifetime. 14K is more durable for daily wear; 18K has a richer tone.
What about moissanite?
Moissanite is a lab-grown gemstone with even more brilliance and fire than a diamond and a hardness of 9.25. Ours is mostly set in 925 silver and comes with a certificate. Learn more in our moissanite guide.
